Coney Island, snowy morning and diner coma

On Sunday we had breakfast at George’s Restaurant that had been operating since 1950 until it had to be demolished after 911. However, it was later rebuilt and we were able to enjoy a tasty breakfast upstairs. Then we took the ferry to Staten Island just so our first timers got to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. After the ferry ride we headed to Coney Island. The day was partly overcast but quite warm so after strolling up and down the boardwalk we sat down for a couple of drinks and people watching. This was the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday. I now realize that postponing my blog posts too long results in memory loss – I have no idea what we did for lunch on Sunday. I do remember that we had dinner at a cool little pizza place in Brooklyn called Barboncino. I’m afraid I was too hungry to take any pictures but it was hands down one of the best pizzas I had had in ages. I ate a white pizza called Arugula, with cherry tomatoes, fior di latte, garlic, shaved parmigiano reggiano and extra virgin olive oil. This place also served tasty cocktails so we rounded off dinner with a cocktail.

We bumped into some police horses

Monday was our last whole day in NYC and we woke up to snow. Luckily our plan was to do some shopping in Manhattan so the weather was not an issue. We started the day by having breakfast at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop that has been operating since 1929. The sandwiches were delicious and the service was great. After breakfast it was time to hit Macy’s and a few other staples like Victoria’s Secret and Old Navy. We also tried out the 2nd floor Herald Square Café at Macy’s for afternoon coffee. It is essentially a fancier Starbucks with its own drinks menu that also serves champagne and wine. Shopping made us thirsty so we eventually ended up at the ground floor of the Empire State Building where another Heartland Brewery is located. For dinner we decided to do something traditional and headed to Junior’s in Brooklyn. Hubby had ribs and I opted for the Tuna Melt with a side of fries. Should have skipped the fries as I could not even eat one third of my portion. Regardless of being stuffed we simply had to share a slice of cheesecake for dessert – our choice was Raspberry swirl cheesecake.

On Tuesday we had time for one last breakfast before heading to the airport and we decided to revisit the New Apollo Diner as it was a convenient subway ride away. We had another lovely vacation in NYC that both as veterans and our first timers enjoyed. All I know is we will definitely be back again one day.
